HKUMed finds that an anti-osteoporosis drug is associated with reduced risk of pneumonia in patients with hip fracture
A study led by a research team of LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) in collaboration with Harvard Medical School, provided the first population-based evidence that a commonly used anti-osteoporosis drug, bisphosphonate, was associated with reduced risk of pneumonia and pneumonia mortality in patients with hip fracture, compared to non-treatment and other anti-osteoporosis treatment. The findings are now published in the latest issue of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, one of the highest-ranked journals in the field.
Most close relatives of birds neared the potential for powered flight but few crossed its thresholds
Uncertainties in the evolutionary tree of birds and their closest relatives have impeded deeper understanding of early flight in theropods, the group of dinosaurs that includes birds. To help address this, an international study led by HKU Research Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Pittman (Vertebrate Palaeontology Laboratory, Division of Earth and Planetary Science & Department of Earth Sciences) and co-first-authored by his former Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Rui Pei (now an Associate Professor at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Beijing), produced an updated...
HKUMed discovers that acute SARS-CoV-2 infection impairs human immune defences: significant implications for viral transmission, disease severity and vaccine research
Researchers at the AIDS Institute, Department of Microbiology and State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases, LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed), in collaboration with clinicians at Queen Mary Hospital, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital, conducted a study for determining the role of human immune responses in acute SARS-CoV-2 infection (within 3 weeks after infection) by investigating 17 acute and 24 convalescent COVID-19 patients as compared with healthy people in Hong Kong. The study demonstrated that acute SARS-CoV...

HKUMed researchers first discovered SARS-CoV-2 infects human neural progenitor cells and brain organoids
Researchers at the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Department of Microbiology and the Department of Medicine, LKS Faculty of Medicine of The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) collaborated with researchers at the Institute of Synthetic Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences-Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology to conduct a study on SARS-CoV-2 infection of human neural progenitor cells and brain organoids. The results are now published in life sciences journal Cell Research.
