About the Faculty
The Faculty of Science was formally established in 1939, though basic science subjects were taught from as early as 1912 when the University first admitted students. Since then, the Faculty has developed into one of the largest in the University, comprising six departments/ school: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics & Actuarial Science.
The Faculty offers 3 first-degree programmes with a total enrolment of more than 2,300 students. We seek to provide comprehensive education in the sciences to meet the needs of society, and to promote science literacy through its quality teaching, research and interaction with the community. We are committed to educating the younger generation and equipping them with an analytical and innovative mind for the challenges of the rapidly changing world.
The Faculty turned 80 years old in 2019. Building on our achievements in those eight decades, we are ambitious to scale new heights in the years ahead. We strive to be pre-eminent in Hong Kong, leading in Asia and highly competitive globally, consistent with the University's aim to be Asia's Global University.
Frontier Research by First-Class Scholars
The Faculty of Science employs around 150 professoriate staff members, who have all obtained PhD degrees from prestigious universities around the world. We have one of the world’s premier science faculties. Around 15.4% of our faculties are ”Top 1%” highly cited researchers (as defined by Clarivate Analytics' Essential Science Indicators 2019), we have 4 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the same number of members of Science Academies overseas, and many other internationally-recognised distinctions. Over 45 patents were issued for inventions from this faculty in the last two years.
Building an International Environment
Over 30% of our students are from overseas, with people coming to us from 40 countries, similarly over 60% of our academic staff are from outside Hong Kong. We have built extensive networks with overseas collaborators. All of these contribute to HKU’s high standing in the world – there are about 22,000 universities in the world, HKU ranks 22nd in QS World University Rankings in 2021. As a Faculty we consistently rank in the top 50 in the world and top ten in Asia.
